✽  Who We Are

Our approach, experience

and services

Approach

The meaning of lego in Latin can be translated to mean to gather information, to read, to traverse, to choose and to unfold, together with others. And Lex? Well, that’s the law.

At Legolex this forms the basis of our approach to legal matters: working together and alongside clients to gather information, explore possibilities, unpack them, deliberate and consider all factors and choose the best and most viable options.

We take a hands-on, solutions-focused approach to labour and employment law matters. Every client engagement is grounded in clear communication, practical advice, and a deep understanding of how labour and employment issues can impact business operations on a day-to-day level.

Lego is also the name of the founder’s Golden Retriever, named after the famous elf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Legolas, who symbolises unwavering loyalty, a sense of duty and a firm commitment to the greater good.

Experience

Michiel Heyns obtained his LLB degree in 2008. He founded Legolex after 15 years of practicing as an attorney, specialising and gaining experience in employment and labour law at a top-tier South African law firm.

During this time he advised clients across all sectors — ranging from finance, mining, and technology to agriculture and construction.

He has a passion for people and their well-being and approaches all matters with this mindset.

Michiel has extensive experience with the chairing of disciplinary hearings and performance inquiries, employee grievances, trade union negotiations, Department of Employment and Labour Inspectorate and bargaining council investigations, internal investigations and inquiries at executive level, as well as forensic investigations.

He is well-seasoned in the drafting and review of everything from employment contracts, mutual separation agreements, boardroom resolutions, forensic reports, due diligence reports, retrenchment notices to workplace policies and procedures.

He has worked on numerous cases in the Labour Court, Labour Appeal Court, High Court and Constitutional Court.

Michiel also holds a Masters degree in Afrikaans and Dutch literature and is well versed in translations.

✽  What We Do

Employment Advisory

We offer expert guidance on all aspects of employment law — from drafting employment contracts and independent contractor agreements to advising on executive appointments and workplace policies. Whether you're hiring, restructuring, or managing complex employment relationships, we help ensure your legal documentation is watertight, compliant, and aligned with your business objectives. Our employment law services are trusted by clients across South Africa’s mining, tech, construction, and agricultural sectors.

Workplace Dispute Resolution

Navigating employment disputes can be high-stakes and time-sensitive. We assist and advise employers with internal dispute resolution processes, including disciplinary hearings and grievance inquiries, external unfair dismissal claims, workplace harassment matters, and collective bargaining disputes. With extensive knowledge of the High Court, the CCMA, Labour Court, Labour Appeal Court, and other dispute forums we act as liaison between clients and external legal counsel, should it become necessary, in order to minimise the impact on employers' businesses and their time.

Forensic Investigations and Disciplinary Processes

When fraud, theft, or employee misconduct threatens your organisation, we provide discreet and thorough internal investigations. We assist with the full process — from forensic interviews to disciplinary charges and hearings. We work closely with HR and leadership teams to ensure each step complies with South African labour law and holds up under scrutiny.

Employment Law in Corporate Transactions

Labour law risks often surface during mergers, acquisitions, or business transfers. We assist with section 197 transfers, restructuring plans, and section 189 retrenchments. We also support employment law due diligence and draft the associated notices, waivers, and agreements required to execute these transitions legally and efficiently. If your transaction involves workforce change, we ensure you’re protected from both legal fallout and operational disruption.
